Sedation

Our office offers the following sedation options for those few children who may require it.

  • In Office Sedation with medical board certified pediatric anesthesiologist, Dr. Richard Marns
  • General Anesthesia in a hospital setting at Montefiore Nyack
  • Nitrous Oxide-also known as “laughing gas”; this is a safe and effective technique used to calm a child’s fear of the dental visit. It has a calming effect. It is perhaps the safest sedative in dentistry since the child remains fully conscious during the procedure Dr. Boudounis will review these options with you at your visit if needed.

Bleaching
Our office offers bleaching using Opalescence Go.
Opalescence Go™ is a convenient, easy-to-use whitening treatment to go, and is the professional alternative to over-the-counter teeth whitening products. It features a unique UltraFit™ tray that molds and conforms to any patient’s smile providing a comfortable, custom-like fit and optimal gel/tooth contact. No impressions, models or lab time required.

SDF-Silver Diamine Fluoride
Silver Diamine Fluoride is a liquid used on cavities to help stop the progression of tooth decay. In some cases, where dentists used to do regular fillings, it is now possible to use a non-traumatic, less invasive treatment to stop the caries process. This is most commonly used for patients who cannot tolerate dental procedures (patients under 5 years of age or special needs patients).

Procedure:

  • Dry the affected area (cavity)
  • Place a small amount of SDF liquid on the area with a cotton applicator
  • Allow SDF to dry for one minute
  • Air-dry tooth or blot with a cotton roll
  • A follow up visit and re-application may be needed

What to expect after treatment:

  • The affected area will stain black permanently. Healthy tooth structure will not stain. (The stained tooth structure can be replaced later with a filling or crown when the patient can tolerate the procedure, if wanted)
  • If accidentally applied to the skin, a brown stain may appear that causes no harm and will disappear in a few days

Icon Resin Infiltration:

A Non-Invasive Treatment Option for Enamel Defects (“white spots”)

Unsightly enamel defects can be a source of embarrassment for many patients. Regardless of the cause-be it hypomineralization, fluorosis, trauma, illness in infancy, white spots after braces are removed or unknown etiology-Icon can help. Historically, these blemishes have been treated with invasive and costly resin bondings and veneers.

Now, Icon requires no anesthesia and no drilling.

Procedure:

  • Plain pumice is used to clean the teeth
  • Lesion/white spot is etched for 2 minute intervals-this produces microporosities (etching may be repeated as needed)
  • Application of a drying agent (ethanol)
  • The tooth is then flooded with Icon resin which penetrates deeply into the enamel microporosities (applied with a micro brush)
  • Material soaks in the tooth for 3 minutes
  • Light cure the material
  • Total process take 1-2 hours depending on how many teeth are being treated
  • Can also be used to treat incipient lesions between the teeth to arrest caries

Benefits include:

  • Non-invasive and less expensive than the alternatives of fillings or veneers
  • Can be done sooner than other cosmetic options; you do not have to wait for growth to be complete like you do with crowns or veneers making it a good option for younger children
  • A long term option; most white spots do not come back after treatment is complete
  • Can also be used to treat incipient lesions between the teeth to arrest caries
